Church Roof Deicing

Aesthetics, longevity and performance were the primary objectives when selecting the appropriate way to melt the snow and ice off of the roof of this church located in Park City, Utah. Heatizon Systems Tuff Cable in a Heatsink Kit and Heatizon Systems ZMesh Roof Snow Melt and Deicing products were selected for the project because they were able to satisfy all three objectives. When the project was completed approximately 3300 square feet of the roof of a large house of worship located in snowy Park City, Utah was protected from ice dams, and icicles.

ZMesh and Tuff Cable in valley

The architects desired to utilize metal in the valleys of the roof so Heatizon Systems Tuff Cable in a Heatsink Kit was selected for these areas. The Heatsink Kit was installed directly on top of ice and water shield (it could have been installed directly on top of the sub-roof but the ice and water shield was already in place). Then the Tuff Cable was installed into the Heatsink Kit. Once the Tuff Cable had been installed the Heatsink Kit was covered with ice and water shield, which was then covered with valley metal

As for the eaves, ZMesh was selected and installed under the composite shingles approximately 8 feet up the roof. ZMesh was installed directly on top of ice and water shield (it could have been installed directly on top of the sub-roof but the ice and water shield was already in place). Once the ZMesh was stapled in place ice and water shield was installed directly on top of it. Composite shingles were then installed on top of the ice and water shield.

The roof snow melt and deicing systems are activated by an aerial mounted temperature/moisture sensor and an independent manual override for each of the 10 zones. As a result whenever two events occur simultaneously the roof snow melt and deicing systems turn on. The two required events are an ambient temperature of 38 degrees F. and moisture falling on the self drying head of the sensor. The aerial mounted temperature/moisture sensor is wired to Heatizon Systems M329 Selector which turns each zone on in sequential order so the primary power source is not over loaded. The Selector also provides manual override to turn one or more of the zones on.
