Roof Deicing- Pepperidge Farm

pepperidgefarmAt the Pepperidge Farm manufacturing plant in Richmond, Utah, a recent plant expansion created a problem with snow and ice buildup on a section of roof.  This collection of snow and ice caused concerns with the amount of weight on the roof.

To alleviate the snow and ice buildup it was determined that new drains and radiant heat would be installed along the wall where the snow was collecting.  New drains were installed and crickets were built to help direct any melting snow to those drains.

Warmquest then installed a low voltage ZMesh snow melting system on top of the existing PVC membrane roof.  For snow melting on a membrane roof Warmquest installed 9” wide ZMesh on 2” spacing. The ZMesh would create a heated area extending 7 ½’ from the wall and drains.  To create a path for melting snow further into the center of the roof, the ZMesh was extended out beyond the 7 ½’ an addition 16’. Warmquest used a PVC membrane adhesive to secure the ZMesh to the existing roof. After the ZMesh was adhered, a new layer of PVC membrane roofing was then installed over the top of the ZMesh.  GutterMelt heat tape was then installed directly in front of and down each drain. This would prevent the melted snow from freezing while flowing down the drains.


Pepperidge Farms chose to activate these systems based on the ambient air temperature.  Warmquest installed temperature sensors that would activate the snow melting systems any time the temperature was below 38°F and above 5°F. The control units for both the ZMesh systems and the GutterMelt system are connected together and are activated at the same time by the same sensors.
